Mount Kenya University Maritime Academy in Malindi features a state-of-the-art survival training pool designed to provide realistic, hands-on instruction in Personal Survival Techniques (PST), a core component of the Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) course.
The pool measures 12 metres in length, 8 metres in width, with a depth of 7 metres and a shallow end of 4 metres. Its depth is intentionally designed to simulate deep-sea conditions, allowing trainees to gain practical experience in life-saving survival skills while awaiting rescue in emergency situations.
Within this facility, students are trained to respond effectively to various maritime emergencies, including:
Man overboard situations
Ship sinking scenarios
Onboard fire outbreaks requiring vessel evacuation
The survival pool represents ocean conditions, while the diving platform simulates a sinking vessel. Here, trainees learn how to safely abandon ship by jumping from height into water, using proper survival techniques before boarding life rafts.
During practical sessions, students are equipped with internationally approved life jackets and immersion suits in compliance with International Maritime Organization (IMO) regulations. This ensures that all trainees, regardless of swimming ability, can safely participate in the course. Training is conducted by qualified STCW instructors and deep-sea lifesaving professionals, ensuring the highest standards of maritime safety education.
